Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is a famous hymn.

Enoch Sontonga wrote it in 1897. He was a teacher at a mission school. The song started with one part in the Xhosa language. Later, a poet named Samuel Mqhayi added seven more parts.

This song is very important to many people in Africa. It helped people fight for freedom and unity. Many countries used its tune for their national anthems. Zambia and Tanzania used the melody for their anthems. Zimbabwe and Namibia also used it for a time.

In South Africa, the song has a big history. During the apartheid era, the government banned the song. It was a symbol for people who wanted change. In 1994, President Nelson Mandela helped make a new anthem. This new song joins two different songs together. It uses many official languages like Xhosa, Zulu, and English.

Singing the song helps people feel like one community. It shows how people can work and sing together.
