Joseph Shabalala started the group in 1960. He had dreams about perfect harmony. He taught his family to sing those soft sounds. The group sings in styles called isicathamiya and mbube.

They chose their name for a reason. Ladysmith is their hometown. Mambazo means "axe" in the Zulu language. This name shows they can "chop down" the competition. They won many contests in their early years.

The group became famous all over the world. They sang with the American singer Paul Simon. This helped many people hear African music. They have won five Grammy Awards. One award was for Nelson Mandela. He was a great leader in South Africa. He called the group cultural ambassadors.
