People call him the father of South African jazz. He played many brass instruments. He played the trumpet, the cornet, and the flugelhorn. A flugelhorn is a brass instrument that sounds soft and warm.

As a boy, Hugh saw a movie about jazz. He wanted to play too. A kind man bought him his first trumpet. Soon, he was leading his own bands. He even played in a famous musical called King Kong.

His music told stories about his home. He sang about joy and passion. He also sang about hard times. He used music to protest apartheid. This was a system of unfair laws in South Africa. His song "Bring Him Back Home" became a famous anthem. It helped people fight for freedom.

Hugh was a star in the United States, too. His song "Grazing in the Grass" was a number-one hit. Four million people bought that record. He also helped start a music school in Botswana. He wanted to help young musicians play together.
