Nizar Nayyouf is a brave journalist and human rights activist from Syria. He was born in the city of Lattakia in 1962. After he finished school, he went to the University of Damascus. There, he studied political economy and how countries develop. He later started a career in news writing. He became the editor-in-chief for a group called Democracy's Voice. He also helped found a group called the Committee for the Defence of Democratic Freedom.

Nizar used his writing to speak about fairness in his country. He wrote about how the government treated its people. In 1991, he wrote a paper about democratic rights. He also spoke about how people were forced to join marches. He worried about people who were stuck in prison. Because of these writings, the Syrian government arrested him in 1991. He was sentenced to ten years of hard labor.

Life in prison was very difficult for Nizar. He was kept in many different places. He stayed at Sednaya Prison and Palmyra prison. Later, he spent much of his time in Mezzeh prison. While he was there, he was hurt many times. These injuries made it very hard for him to walk. He also had cancer while he was in jail. He refused to stop his work even to get medical help.

People all over the world noticed his hard work. Many groups wanted to help him get free. In 2000, he was named a World Press Freedom Hero. He also won the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in 2001. These awards showed that people cared about his safety. In May 2001, President Bashar al-Assad released him. This happened during a visit by Pope John Paul II to Syria.

After he was free, Nizar moved to France to find safety. He lived in France and then the United Kingdom. He still works to help people in Syria. He speaks about the need for democracy and fairness. Even when he faced more trouble in Europe, he did not stop. He continues to tell the truth about what happened in his home country. His story shows how one person can speak for many.
