These goats come from the West African Dwarf group. Between 1930 and 1960, people brought them to the United States. They were first kept for shows and as pets. People chose goats that were calm and looked good. Later, people found they were good for dairy. Dairy means they are used to make milk.

These goats look like tiny versions of large dairy goats. They have short hair in many colors. Some are gold, chocolate, or black. They may even have blue eyes. Males can weigh about 35 pounds. Females are usually a bit smaller.

Nigerian Dwarfs are very good at having babies. They often have twins. Sometimes they even have triplets or quadruplets. A mother goat is pregnant for about 145 to 153 days. The milk they make is special. It has a lot of protein and butterfat. This makes it great for making cheese and butter. These goats can live for 8 to 12 years.
