This title is one of the highest honors in the Chinese military. Born on December 29, 1899, in Jiangjin County, Nie came from a wealthy and well-educated family. His life spanned many of the most important changes in modern Chinese history. He is remembered both for his military command and his leadership in science.

Nie's journey began with a strong interest in technical learning. In his 20s, he traveled to Charleroi, Belgium, to study science. He used a scholarship from the Socialist Party to attend the Université du Travail, or University of Labour. While in Belgium, he met Zhou Enlai, a significant political leader. Zhou became a mentor to Nie during his time abroad. Nie eventually studied engineering through a work-study program in France. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1923.

His military career involved many different roles and challenges. He graduated from the Whampoa Academy and the Soviet Red Army Military College. Early on, he served as a political officer in the Political Department at Whampoa. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Nie served as a deputy division commander. He worked within the 115th division of the Eighth Route Army under Lin Biao.

One of his tasks was building guerrilla bases. He led 2,000 troops to Wutai Mountain to establish the Chin-Ch'a-Chi Border Region.

During the Chinese Civil War, Nie commanded the Northern China Military Region. He worked with his deputy, Xu Xiangqian, to lead important operations. Together, they defeated the forces of Fu Zuoyi in the Pingjin campaign near Beijing. Nie also played a role in high-level command during the Korean War. He helped plan military operations and managed war mobilization. In 1955, the government promoted him to the rank of marshal.

After his military rise, Nie became a leader in China's scientific development. In 1956, he joined the leadership of the Scientific Planning Commission. In 1958, Mao Zedong changed the government structure to create specialized groups. Nie was chosen to head the group in charge of science. He also directed the National Defense Science and Technology Commission (NDSTC).

This commission oversaw important projects like the Lop Nur Nuclear Weapon Test Base. He also managed the Fifth Academy of the Defense Ministry, which focused on missiles.

Nie was a central figure in China's nuclear weapons program. He believed that advanced weapons were necessary for national defense. He argued that missiles and atomic bombs would prevent "nuclear blackmail" from other powers. He wanted to ensure China had a minimum means of reprisal if attacked.

Nie personally oversaw three major nuclear tests. The first was a real warhead missile test in October 1966. The second was an H-bomb principle test in December 1966. The final one was an air-dropped H-bomb test in June 1967.

Despite his successes, Nie faced difficult political times. During the Cultural Revolution in 1967, he faced criticism from the Cultural Revolution Group. He was part of the February Countercurrent and was forced to resign from the NDSTC in 1969. Later, in 1977, he defended the importance of seeking truth from facts. In 1978 and 1979, he proposed a major change to military policy. He suggested canceling the Hurricane-1 tactical nuclear weapon. He believed China should focus on self-defense and a "no-first use" policy. The leaders accepted his proposal.

Nie Rongzhen's family also played roles in Chinese history. His daughter, Nie Li, became the first woman to reach the rank of lieutenant general in the PLA. Nie retired from the Central Committee in September 1985. He retired fully in 1987 and died in Beijing on May 14, 1992. He was the last marshal of the People's Liberation Army to pass away. His career connected the worlds of military strategy and advanced scientific research.
