Zhu De was a central figure in 20th-century Chinese history. He was a general, a military strategist, and a high-ranking politician. He played a vital role in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Most importantly, he was one of the principal founders of the People's Republic of China. His life spanned from the late 1800s to the mid-1970s.

During this time, he moved from a life of extreme poverty to a position of immense national power.

Zhu De's early life was defined by hardship and sudden change. He was born on December 1, 1886, in Hung, Yilong County. His family was part of the Hakka people who had migrated to Sichuan. His family was very poor, and only eight of his fifteen siblings survived. At age nine, a wealthy uncle adopted him. This adoption provided the resources for a superior education. This path eventually led him to the Yunnan Military Academy in Kunming.

His early career involved military service and personal struggles. After graduating in 1911, he joined revolutionary forces. He served as a regimental commander during the campaigns of 1915–16. In 1916, he experienced great personal loss when his mentor, Cai E, and his first wife, Xiao Jufang, died. These events led to a severe opium addiction. He struggled with this habit for several years. He finally underwent treatment in Shanghai in 1922.

Zhu De's political views changed through international travel. In 1922, he traveled to Berlin, Germany. He studied at Göttingen University while living there until 1925. During this time, he met the leader Zhou Enlai. He also joined the Chinese Communist Party while in Europe. Afterward, he traveled to the Soviet Union. There, he studied Marxism and military affairs at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East.

A major turning point occurred in 1928. Zhu De met Mao Zedong on the Longjiang Bridge. This meeting was helped by Mao Zetan, who was Mao's brother. Zhu De wanted to unite their forces for a specific military and agrarian policy. Their combined forces became the "Fourth Red Army." Zhu served as the Military Commander, while Mao served as the Party representative. Because they worked so closely, people called them "Zhu-Mao."

As a commander, Zhu De was highly skilled in irregular combat. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he led the Eighth Route Army. He also organized the Hundred Regiments Offensive in 1940. An American Marine Corps colonel named Evans Carlson called him a "master of guerrilla warfare." Guerrilla warfare involves using small, mobile groups to fight a larger enemy.

In 1949, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

In his later years, Zhu De held several prestigious titles. In 1955, he was ranked first among the ten marshals of China. A marshal is one of the highest possible military ranks.

He also served as the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress from 1959 to 1976. Although he faced political dismissal during the Cultural Revolution, he was reinstated in 1973. He continued to work as a statesman until his death on July 6, 1976. His death came just months before the death of Mao Zedong.

Zhu De's legacy is tied to the very structure of modern China. He helped transform a collection of rebel groups into a massive national military. His leadership helped the CCP navigate the Chinese Civil War and the Second Sino-Japanese War. His transition from a local soldier to a national founder is a key part of Chinese political history. He remains a symbol of the revolutionary era that shaped the nation.
