Lin was a key figure in the Communist victory. He later became a top leader in the Chinese government. His life ended in a mysterious plane crash in 1971. This event is known as the "Lin Biao incident."

Lin was born in 1907 to a merchant family in Hubei. His father ran a small handicrafts factory. However, heavy taxes from local militarists forced the factory to close. His father then worked as a purser on a river steamship. Lin attended primary school in 1917. He moved to Shanghai in 1919 for more education. As a student, he preferred participating in student movements. He eventually enrolled in the Whampoa Military Academy in Guangzhou.

Lin became a highly successful military commander through unique tactics. He favored guerrilla warfare over direct, positional combat. This strategy used feints, ambushes, and surprise attacks to weaken enemies. He believed in avoiding large, static battles to preserve his forces. His First Army Group was known for its high mobility. Between 1930 and 1933, his forces captured twice the prisoners and equipment of other groups combined.

His military writings were studied in Japan and Soviet Russia. He was considered one of the Red Army's best battlefield commanders.

During the Chinese Civil War, Lin led several decisive campaigns. He commanded the Manchurian Field Army during the Liaoshen and Pingjin campaigns. These victories helped the People's Liberation Army enter Beijing. In 1949, he led troops across the Yangtze River. This move helped his forces take control of the coastal provinces in Southeast China.

After the civil war ended in 1949, Lin held many government roles. He served as a Vice Premier starting in 1954. By 1964, he became the First Vice Premier. He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1958.

Lin's career ended abruptly on September 13, 1971. He was traveling on a Hawker Siddeley Trident aircraft. The plane crashed in Öndörkhaan, Mongolia. The reasons for the crash remain a subject of great speculation. The Chinese government stated that Lin and his family tried to flee after a failed coup.

Other theories suggest he fled because he feared being purged. His relationship with other Communist Party leaders had become difficult. Following his death, the party officially labeled him a traitor.

In modern history, Lin Biao is viewed through a complex lens. Since the late 1970s, the Chinese government has blamed him for many issues. He and Jiang Qing are labeled as major "counter-revolutionary forces." They are held responsible for the worst excesses of the Cultural Revolution.
