A defenceman is a player who works to protect their own goal. Many people called him "the Perfect Human" because of how well he played. He spent his entire 20-year career in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings. During his time there, he helped his team reach the playoffs every single year. This was the longest streak for any player in the history of the league. He was a leader who served as team captain for six seasons.

Lidström was famous for his skill and his ability to stay in the game. He often played a lot of minutes during every match. In the 2005–06 season, he averaged 28:07 minutes of ice time per game. This was the highest amount of time he ever played in a single season. He was very durable and rarely missed games due to injury. By the 2003–04 season, he had already played 1,000 professional games. He was even the first European-born defenceman to reach 1,000 points.

His journey started in Avesta, Sweden, where he played for Skogsbo SK.

They picked him 53rd overall in that draft. He joined the Red Wings for the 1991–92 season. He even played a short time for Västerås IK during the 1994–95 lockout.
