He is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. Today, he shares his expertise as an analyst for ESPN's College GameDay. This television program provides deep coverage of college football games. Saban uses his vast experience to help viewers understand the complexities of the game. His career is defined by intense competition and a long list of major victories.

Saban's coaching journey required many years of preparation and diverse roles. He began as a graduate assistant at Kent State University under coach Don James. He then served as an assistant coach at several major programs. These included Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, Navy, and Michigan State. He also spent time in the National Football League (NFL) as a defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. During his four years with the Browns, his 1994 defensive unit allowed the fewest points in the NFL. This period of intense professional growth shaped his leadership style.

His path to becoming a head coach involved several different university programs. He first took a head coaching role at the University of Toledo in 1989. Under his leadership, the Rockets became co-champions of the Mid-American Conference in 1990. He then moved to Michigan State, where he led the Spartans to several bowl games. In 1999, he accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana State University (LSU). His time at LSU was highly successful, culminating in a major national title.

They then defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sugar Bowl to win the BCS National Championship. This victory marked the first of many national titles for Saban. He became the first coach to win a national championship with two different Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools. This achievement is significant because it has not happened since the AP Poll began in 1936.

Saban's most famous era occurred at the University of Alabama from 2007 to 2023.

During this period, he transformed the Alabama Crimson Tide into a dominant force. He led the team to six claimed national championships and one unclaimed championship. His coaching staff also secured nine SEC titles and 10 SEC West Division championships. Saban's overall college coaching record is an impressive 292–71–1. He also coached four different players to win the Heisman Trophy, which is a top individual honor. These players were Mark Ingram II, Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith, and Bryce Young.
