It is a very important part of many musical traditions. People use it in Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Jewish, Arab, and Egyptian music. In some of these cultures, it is the only wind instrument played. It is also one of the oldest instruments in the world. People have played the ney for over 4,500 years. This long history goes all the way back to ancient Egypt.

Making a ney is a very special process. Most neys are made from a hollow piece of cane or giant reed. They have finger holes to change the notes. A Persian ney usually has six holes. Arabic and Turkish neys often have seven holes. One hole is placed on the back for the thumb.

The Arabic ney is played without any mouthpiece at all. However, the Turkish ney sometimes uses a mouthpiece made of brass, horn, or plastic. This mouthpiece protects the wood from damage. It also helps the player make a steeper, better sound.

Playing the ney takes a lot of skill and practice. A highly skilled player is called a neyzen. A neyzen can reach more than three octaves with their music. Because the instrument has different pitch ranges, players often use helper neys. These extra flutes help them play very difficult parts of a song. In the Arabic and Egyptian systems, there are seven common ranges. One is called Rast, which is the lowest and longest. Another common one is called Dukah, which is in the key of D. Other names include Busalik, Jaharka, Nawa, Hussayni, and Ajam.

There are many other flutes that are similar to the ney. In Romania, a similar end-blown flute is called a caval.

There is also a long reed flute called the kargı düdük. Legend says this instrument is connected to Alexander the Great. In some places, like Uzbekistan, the ney is a side-blown flute. These can be made of wood, bamboo, or even brass. In eastern Badakhshan, a flute called the Pamiri nay can even be made from eagle bone.

Music is a way for people to share their deepest feelings. The ney is often used for a performance called falaki. These are short melodic sessions that tell stories. They can express sadness about being far from home. They might tell of a mother separated from her daughter. They can also express feelings about the injustice of heaven. Through these songs, the ney helps people share their hearts with others.
