These experiences abroad influenced his views on political leadership. He earned a PhD in European history from Tulane University. Before entering politics, he taught history and geography at West Georgia College. He even helped coordinate a new environmental studies program there.

Gingrich's path to Congress involved several early attempts. He first ran for office in 1974 but lost to Democrat Jack Flynt. He tried again in 1976 but was unsuccessful. Finally, in November 1978, he won his seat in the House of Representatives. He was the first Republican to win in that specific district. He served many terms representing the north Atlanta area. During his time in the House, he focused on building political influence. He co-founded groups like the Military Reform Caucus and the Congressional Aviation and Space Caucus.

In the 1980s, Gingrich began organizing conservative leaders. He founded the Conservative Opportunity Society in 1983. This group allowed young Republican representatives to exchange and develop new ideas. His work helped shape the platform used by President Ronald Reagan. In 1989, Gingrich achieved a major leadership role as House minority whip. This position meant he was responsible for ensuring party members voted together. He used this role to make the Republican Party more aggressive and active. He also worked to challenge the long-standing Democratic majority in the House.

This was a specific set of promises made to voters. It helped Republicans win a massive victory in the House. Because of this success, Gingrich became Speaker of the House in 1995. Time magazine named him "Man of the Year" for this achievement. As Speaker, he oversaw significant legislative changes. These included welfare reform in 1996 and capital gains tax cuts in 1997.

His leadership was often marked by intense political conflict. Gingrich played a central role in several federal government shutdowns. He also led the House in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. However, his time as Speaker eventually faced serious challenges. He dealt with an ethics violation and a reprimand from the House. Following disappointing election results for his party in 1998, he faced pressure from colleagues. Gingrich announced he would not seek re-election as Speaker. He resigned from the House on January 3, 1999.
