This role is one of the most powerful positions in the U.S. government. Pelosi held this office from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. She was the first woman ever elected to this position. Additionally, she was the first woman to lead a major political party in either chamber of Congress. As a member of the Democratic Party, she led House Democrats from 2003 until 2023. Her long tenure as a party leader is the second-longest in history.

Pelosi was born on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland. She grew up in a family deeply involved in public service. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., was a Democratic congressman and later the mayor of Baltimore. Her mother, Annunciata, was also politically active and taught Nancy important political skills. Pelosi graduated from Trinity College in 1962 with a degree in political science. After marriage to Paul Pelosi, the family eventually settled in San Francisco, California. She began her political journey as a volunteer for the Democratic Party. She later rose to lead the California Democratic Party from 1979 to 1983.

In 1987, Pelosi won a special election to join the U.S. House of Representatives.

She has represented a district in San Francisco for nearly four decades. Throughout her career, she rose through the ranks of the House Democratic Caucus. In 2001, she was elected House minority whip, which is a high-ranking leadership position. A year later, she became the House minority leader. In 2006, the Democrats won a majority in the House. This victory allowed Pelosi to be elected Speaker for the first time. She remained a central figure in the House for many years.

Pelosi has been a key figure in passing major national legislation. During her first term as Speaker, she worked with the Obama administration. She helped pass the Affordable Care Act to change healthcare in America. She also supported the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Other major laws included the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act and the 2010 Tax Relief Act.

During her second speakership, she helped pass the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. She also contributed to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the CHIPS and Science Act. Her leadership helped shape the laws that govern the modern United States.

Early in her career, Pelosi focused on urgent social issues. When she first entered Congress, the AIDS epidemic was a major crisis. San Francisco was one of the areas most affected by the disease. Pelosi became a strong advocate for those suffering from HIV/AIDS. She co-authored the Ryan White CARE Act in 1990. This law provided essential funding for medical treatment and services. She also worked on the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1994. These actions showed her focus on using federal law to address public health and safety.

Pelosi's leadership also involved significant political conflict. During her second term as Speaker, the House impeached President Donald Trump twice. The first impeachment occurred in December 2019, and the second in January 2021.

In both cases, the Senate did not reach the two-thirds majority required for conviction. These events were major moments in American political history. Pelosi has also been a prolific fundraiser for her party. Between 2003 and 2014, she raised more than $400 million in campaign funds. This financial strength helped her maintain influence within the Democratic Party.

Because of her power, Pelosi is often seen as a polarizing figure. This means people hold very strong and different opinions about her. Some critics from conservative groups disagree with her policy positions. Some progressives have also criticized her leadership style and rhetoric. She has faced scrutiny regarding various issues, including the Trump impeachments and allegations of insider trading. Despite these debates, her influence on the American political system is undeniable. She announced she would not seek reelection in 2026. She plans to retire from Congress in January 2027.
