It began in the mid-to-late 1970s. Many people think of it as a lighter part of punk culture. It kept the high energy of punk. But it also added catchy melodies.

New wave music has a very unique sound. Musicians often use synthesizers, which are electronic machines that make sounds. The music can feel jerky or twitchy. It might have fast tempos and choppy guitar parts.

Some singers use high-pitched or geeky voices.

This music is also about how it looks. Artists often had a quirky visual style. They might wear big glasses or suits. Some even did robotic dancing.

In the early 1980s, a channel called MTV helped these bands become famous. MTV showed music videos to many people in the United States.
