New Atheism is a movement that began in the 21st century. It is made up of many different thinkers. These include scientists, writers, and philosophers. They are often opposed to religion and superstition. Many of them hold a view called antitheism. This means they want to examine and criticize religious ideas. They especially want to look at religion when it has a strong influence on society. This might include its role in government, education, or politics.

Many members of this movement use science to look at the world. They believe that ideas about gods are actually scientific hypotheses. A hypothesis is an idea that can be tested. Richard Dawkins and Victor Stenger both argued that science can test these claims. For example, they looked at whether prayer can heal people. They argued that natural laws can explain everything we see. Because of this, they believe we do not need the supernatural to understand reality.

Some very famous people are linked to this movement. They are often called the "Four Horsemen." This name comes from a story in the Bible. The four men are Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris. Ayaan Hirsi Ali was also a key figure. Some people even called her the fifth "Horsewoman."

Each of these leaders has done important work. Richard Dawkins wrote a famous book called The God Delusion. Sam Harris wrote The End of Faith in 2004. He also wrote The Moral Landscape about how science relates to morality. Christopher Hitchens was a journalist who wrote God Is Not Great. Daniel Dennett studied how some religious leaders are secretly atheists. He co-authored a book called Caught in the Pulpit in 2013.

These thinkers often disagree with other ideas about science and faith. Some people believe science and religion should stay in separate areas. This idea is called non-overlapping magisteria. However, Richard Dawkins disagrees with this view. He says that religions make claims about how the universe works. Therefore, he believes those claims fall into the world of science. This movement continues to be a topic of much debate among scholars.
