She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on November 13, 1969. Her father, Hirsi Magan Isse, was a leader in the Somali Revolution. He was a student at Columbia University in New York. He was also a devout Muslim who spoke against certain traditions. Because he opposed the government, he was sent to prison. While he was away, Ayaan's grandmother had a procedure performed on her. This was female genital mutilation, which happened when she was five years old.

Ayaan's family moved to many different places to stay safe. They lived in Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and then Kenya. In Kenya, they lived for ten years and had a comfortable life. During her school years, Ayaan followed a strict version of Islam. She even wore a hijab with her school uniform. She loved reading English adventure books like the Nancy Drew series. These stories showed strong women who could solve mysteries. These books helped her imagine a different kind of life.

In 1992, Ayaan moved to the Netherlands. She went there to escape a forced marriage. She asked for political asylum and soon became a Dutch citizen. At first, she worked many different jobs. She cleaned buildings and sorted the mail. She also worked as a translator for Somali women. She learned to speak six languages, including Dutch and Arabic. Later, she studied at Leiden University and earned a master's degree in political science.

Ayaan entered politics in the Netherlands. In 2003, she was elected to the States General. She joined the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy. She used her position to speak about the rights of women. She worked with a director named Theo van Gogh. They made a short film called Submission. This film showed how some women were treated unfairly.

Sadly, the film caused great anger. A man named Mohammed Bouyeri murdered Van Gogh in 2004. Because of these threats, Ayaan had to go into hiding.

Ayaan eventually moved to the United States. She became an American citizen in 2013. She works with a group called the American Enterprise Institute. She has written several bestselling books about her life. These include Infidel, Nomad, and Heretic. In 2005, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people.
