It was published in 1984 and changed how people think about the future. The story is set in a dark, near-future world. This type of setting is often called a dystopia. The book follows a man named Case. Case is a computer hacker who used to be very talented. He lost his ability to enter the digital world after a bad event. Now, he must join a dangerous team to get his skills back.

This mission is a high-stakes heist involving a powerful artificial intelligence.

To tell this story, Gibson created many new ideas. One major idea is cyberspace. This is a digital space that humans can visit. In this world, people use a method called "jacking in." This means they connect their bodies to computers using bio-mechanical tools.

The book also uses a term called ICE. This stands for Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics. ICE acts like a digital barrier to protect data. These concepts helped define the cyberpunk genre. Cyberpunk stories often show advanced technology existing alongside social decay and crime.

William Gibson worked hard to make the book feel real. He was a teaching assistant at the University of British Columbia in 1981. Before this novel, he wrote short stories for science-fiction magazines. He actually wrote the first two-thirds of the book twelve times. He wanted the writing to be tight and fast-paced. Gibson did not use a strict outline for the story. He said he wrote it in a state of "blind animal panic." He wanted to make sure the reader stayed interested at every moment.

Many different things inspired the world of Neuromancer. Gibson looked at detective stories like those by Raymond Chandler. The character Case is a bit like a detective in a heist. He was also influenced by the art of Jean Giraud. The book's style also took ideas from the writer William S. Burroughs. Even movies like Blade Runner and Escape from New York played a role. Gibson wanted the setting to feel like the 1980s. He used slang from bikers and drug dealers from Toronto. This helped make the world feel lived-in and gritty.

Neuromancer became a huge success after it was released. It did not have much hype at first. Instead, it became a hit through word of mouth. The book is very special because it won three major awards. It won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. It is the only novel to win all three. In 2005, Time magazine named it one of the best novels ever written. It is now considered a classic of science fiction.
