Neurology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the nervous system. This system includes your brain, your spinal cord, and your peripheral nerves.

A doctor who specializes in this field is called a neurologist. They work to find and treat many different health problems. These problems might include headaches, sleep disorders, or brain injuries. They also help people with diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Neurologists are experts in how these parts of the body work together.

When a patient visits, the neurologist starts by asking about their health history. They listen to the person's specific complaints very carefully. Next, the doctor performs a physical exam to check the nervous system. This exam tests things like mental status and how well you can see. They also check your strength, coordination, and reflexes. They might even watch how you walk, which is called your gait. This helps the doctor find exactly where a problem is located.

To find the truth about a problem, doctors use many special tools. They might use a CT scan or an MRI to take pictures of the body. An MRI uses magnetic resonance imaging to see inside. They might also use an ultrasound to look at blood vessels in the head. Some tests, like an EEG, look at brain wave activity. Other tests check how well your muscles and nerves work. They might even use genetic testing to look at inherited diseases.

Learning to be a neurologist takes a very long time. First, students must finish four years of medical school. After that, they complete a residency, which is extra training. In the United States, this residency usually lasts four years. The first year of residency is spent studying internal medicine. Some doctors then do a fellowship for one to three years. This extra training lets them focus on a subspecialty.

Many important people helped build this field of science. The study of neurology began between the 15th and 16th centuries. Scientists like Thomas Willis and Jean-Martin Charcot were very important. Charcot is often called one of the fathers of neurology. Another famous doctor was Edward Flatau from Poland. In 1894, he published a helpful atlas of the human brain. He also wrote a book about migraines in 1912.
