There are many different types of neurological conditions. Neurologists treat acute issues like stroke and brain injuries. They also manage chronic conditions such as epilepsy and seizures. Many patients seek help for movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease. Other common conditions include migraines, sleep disorders, and various brain infections. Some specialists focus on neuroimmunology or neurooncology, which involves brain tumors. There are also specialists in neurorehabilitation and pain medicine. Clinical neurophysiologists specialize in using EEG and intraoperative monitoring. Others focus on electrodiagnostic medicine, using needle EMG and NCS.
Becoming a neurologist requires many years of intense training. In the United States, doctors first complete four years of medical school. After graduation, they enter a residency period. This postgraduate training typically lasts four years. The first year of residency is devoted to internal medicine. On average, neurologists complete eight to ten years of total training. Some also complete a fellowship, which lasts one to three years. This extra training allows them to master a specific subspecialty.
