Neurosurgery is a very special kind of medicine.

It focuses on treating the nervous system through surgery. This system includes the brain and the spinal cord. It also includes the peripheral nervous system and the cerebrovascular system. Doctors can perform surgery to help people heal. They can also manage some conditions without using surgery at all. This work is vital for helping the body communicate correctly.

Doctors use many different tools to perform these delicate tasks. Some tools are very small and precise. They use items like chisels, forceps, and tiny hooks. They also use suction tubes and probes to see clearly. Some modern doctors even use robots to help them. These tools are crafted to be accurate within one millimeter.

This extreme precision is needed because the brain is so sensitive. Some tools, like power saws, are newer to the operating room.

People have been working on the head for thousands of years.

In the past, people used a method called trepanation. This involved making a hole in the skull. The Incas practiced this long before Europeans arrived. In the Roman Empire, surgeons worked on skull fractures. Much later, in 1879, William Macewen performed the first successful brain tumor removal. In 1907, Hermann Schloffer successfully removed a pituitary tumor.

Training to become a neurosurgeon is a very long process. In the United States, it takes many years of study. A student must finish four years of college first. Then they must complete four years of medical school. After that, they need seven years of residency training. Some doctors even do a fellowship for one or two years. These fellowships let them study specific things like pediatric neurosurgery. This specialty is very small and highly competitive.

Neurosurgery has many different branches for different needs. General neurosurgery handles most common issues like brain injuries. Some doctors focus on vascular neurosurgery to fix blood vessels. Others work in oncological neurosurgery to treat brain cancers. There is also epilepsy surgery to help stop seizures. This might involve removing small parts of the brain. Some doctors even specialize in helping people who are deaf. They use tools like the cochlear implant to help them hear.
