It is a shrub or a small tree that people grow all over the world. People often plant it in gardens because it looks lovely. It can grow in sunny, dry places or even in wet soil.

The plant has thick, leathery leaves that are dark green. Its flowers grow in big clusters at the ends of branches. These flowers can be white, pink, or red. They often bloom all year long, but they look best in the summer.

This plant has a very interesting way of working with nature. The flowers use a trick to get help from insects. The bright flowers act like a big sign to attract pollinators. However, the flowers do not actually give any nectar as a reward.

Even though there is no food, insects still visit them. When the flowers are ready, they grow long, narrow fruit called follicles. These pods split open to let out many seeds with soft, downy hair. These seeds can then travel to new places to grow.

Oleander has a long history with humans.

The name was first given by the scientist Linnaeus in 1753. Long ago, the ancient Greeks had many different names for it. A Greek doctor named Dioscorides wrote about the plant in the 1st century AD. He said that Romans used the plant to help with snake bites. However, both the plant and the herb rue are poisonous. Using them together might actually make things worse. Some people even think the plant helped priests in ancient Greece enter trances.

There are many important facts to know about where this plant lives. It is found in places like the Mediterranean, Africa, and southern Asia. In the United States, it grows in places like Texas and California.

In California, there are about 25 million oleanders planted along roadsides. Galveston, Texas, is even called the "Oleander City" because there are so many. In the past, many were planted there after a huge hurricane in 1900. This shows how hard the plant can be to kill.

While the plant is beautiful, it can be dangerous. Oleander is a poisonous plant that can make people and animals sick. It tastes very bitter, so most animals do not want to eat it. Eating it can cause stomach pain or a strange heart rhythm.

Even the sap can bother your skin or eyes. Some tiny bugs, like the polka-dot wasp moth caterpillar, are not bothered by the poison. They eat the plant and stay safe from birds. It is a plant that many living things have learned to live with in different ways.
