Some people define a nerd as someone who lacks socio-cultural intuition. This means they might struggle with social skills or be very introverted. While the term was originally used as a negative label, many people have reclaimed it. Today, some use the word as a term of pride and group identity.

Stereotypes often define how a nerd is perceived by others. These descriptions frequently include specific physical traits and fashion choices. Caricatures might show people with very large glasses or dental braces. Other common traits include buck teeth, severe acne, or pants worn high at the waist.

In many media portrayals, nerds are shown as being physically unfit. They are often depicted as being either very skinny or overweight. These stereotypes can be harmful to intelligent students in school. Some students might hide their intelligence to avoid being branded as nerdy.

There are many different theories about where the word originated. The first documented use was in the 1950 book *If I Ran the Zoo* by Dr. Seuss. In this story, a "Nerd" was simply the name of a creature. By 1951, the word became slang in Detroit, Michigan. It was used as a synonym for terms like "drip" or "square." By the early 1960s, the term had spread across the United States and even to Scotland. Over time, the word began to carry meanings related to bookishness and social ineptitude.

Different spellings and variations of the word appeared during the mid-1960s and early 1970s. Some people used the spelling "nurd" or "gnurd." There is an oral tradition that "nurd" comes from "knurd," which is "drunk" spelled backward. This version was used to describe people who preferred studying over partying. Another theory suggests "nurd" is an alteration of the 1940s term "nert." This term meant a "stupid or crazy person" and came from the word "nutcase." The spelling "gnurd" was used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by 1965.

Popular culture played a massive role in spreading the term globally. The 1970s sitcom *Happy Days* helped make the word very popular. In 1978, a group called "The Nerds" premiered on *Saturday Night Live*. The 1984 film *Revenge of the Nerds* also had a huge impact. This movie helped create a definitive image of the nerd stereotype. However, the film also helped inspire the "nerd pride" movement seen in later decades. Some viewers found the movie too idealistic compared to real life.

In the modern era, many qualities once called "nerdy" are now highly valued. Many people who identify as nerds have built large fortunes. They often find success in the computer industry in places like Silicon Valley. Being adept with computers is now a common expectation in professional spaces. Interests like video games and tabletop role-playing games are now international hits. Even celebrities now express interest in handheld digital devices. What was once considered a niche hobby is now part of mainstream culture.

Nerd culture includes many organized events and specific celebrations. In Spain, people observe Nerd Pride Day on May 25. This date marks the anniversary of the release of *Star Wars*. In Australia, large events like Oz Comic-Con attract many fans. In 2016, the Perth event saw nearly 20,000 people participating in cosplay. Fans of the YouTube channel Vlogbrothers even call themselves "nerdfighters." These connections show how a once-marginalized identity has become a widespread community.
