The kidneys are important parts of your body. They clean your blood. They take out extra water and waste. This waste leaves your body as urine.

Special doctors called nephrologists study these organs. They help both adults and children. These doctors look for kidney disease. They also study sicknesses that affect the whole body. For example, diabetes can hurt the kidneys. Some people are born with kidney problems too.

How do doctors find problems? They often start with a history. This is a talk about your health. They also check your blood pressure. Doctors use a urinalysis, which is a study of your urine. They look for things like blood or protein. They also use blood tests. One test checks a thing called creatinine. This helps doctors see how well the kidneys work.

Sometimes, kidneys need big help. A machine can clean the blood for you. This is called dialysis. This process separates waste from the blood. Other people may need a kidney transplant. This is when they get a new kidney from a donor.
