Some people need help cleaning their blood. This happens when their kidneys do not work well.

A special machine can do this job. This way of cleaning is called hemodialysis.

Inside the machine, the blood goes through a filter. This filter is called a dialyzer.

The filter has a thin skin called a semipermeable membrane. This skin has tiny holes. These holes let waste and extra water pass through. At the same time, they keep the good parts of the blood inside. The machine also uses a liquid called dialysate. This liquid helps pull waste out of the blood.

To get the blood to the machine, doctors use a way to reach the blood vessels. This might be a tube called a catheter or a special connection called a fistula.

A kidney doctor, called a nephrologist, plans the treatment. They decide how many times a week a person needs it. Most people go to a clinic three times a week. Each session lasts about three to four hours. Some people even do this at home at night.
