In some lands, people used mud bricks. At a place called Çatalhöyük, they even painted walls. They painted scenes of people and animals. In Europe, families lived in long houses. These had wooden frames and roofs made of straw. Some people lived in pile dwellings. These were houses built on poles near lakes.

People also built big stone structures. These are called megaliths. Some were tombs for the dead. Others were temples or special meeting places. In Malta, people built amazing stone temples. They also carved rooms deep underground. These underground rooms were part of a burial complex.

Other people built paths and wells. The Sweet Track in England is a very old road. In Germany, people made wells out of wood. These old buildings show how much people learned. They helped people live together in new ways.
