Most of what we see today are religious buildings. These include temples and tombs. People used two main materials to build. They used mud bricks for houses and towns. They made these bricks from Nile river mud. The sun dried the mud to make them hard. For big monuments, they used stone. They used limestone, sandstone, and granite.

Some tombs were called mastabas. These were flat, rectangular tombs. Later, builders made the first pyramids. The Stepped Pyramid at Saqqara was very special. It was made by an architect named Imhotep. It used many levels stacked on top of each other.

Another king named Snefru built the Bent Pyramid. It has sides that change angle halfway up. This was done so the heavy stone would not fall. Builders also made beautiful columns. These stone poles often looked like plants. Some looked like bundles of papyrus. Others looked like lotus flowers.
