He was a leader in the Republican Party. For thirty years, he represented the state of Rhode Island in the U.S. Senate. People in the news often called him the "general manager of the Nation." This was because he had so much influence over money and trade. He helped make big decisions that affected the whole country. His work shaped how the United States handled business for a long time.

Aldrich worked through many different jobs before reaching the Senate. He first worked as a clerk for a large grocery company. He worked hard and eventually became a partner in that firm. He also served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

After the war, he got involved in local politics in Rhode Island. He served on the Providence City Council and in the state House. These steps helped him eventually win a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1881.

In the Senate, Aldrich focused on two main things: tariffs and money. A tariff is a tax on goods coming from other countries.

He wanted high tariffs to protect American farms and factories. He was also a leader on the Senate Finance Committee. This committee made important rules about banks and how money moved. By the 1890s, he was part of a group called the "Big Four." These four men controlled most of the major decisions in the Senate.

One of his biggest jobs happened after a scary bank panic in 1907.

Congress created the National Monetary Commission to study the problem. Aldrich led this commission as its chairman. He traveled to places like Europe to see how their banks worked. He worked with experts to create a new plan for American banks. This plan was very important because it helped create the Federal Reserve System in 1913. This is the system that manages money in the U.S. today.

Aldrich's family remained very important in American life for many years.

His daughter, Abigail, married John D. Rockefeller Jr. This connected his family to the famous Rockefeller banking family. His grandson, Nelson A. Rockefeller, even became the Vice President of the United States. Other family members worked in Congress and in large banks. His home in Rhode Island is now a famous historic landmark.
