Later, Nazareth was a Jewish village during the Roman and Byzantine times. It became an important city again during the Crusades. A leader named Tancred made it a capital for the Principality of Galilee.

The city has changed many times through different rulers. It grew under the Mamluks and later the Ottomans. During the Ottoman period, some Christian residents were forced to leave. They were able to return after Fakhr ad-Dīn II gave them permission.

In the 18th century, Daher al-Umar helped the town grow much larger. He encouraged new people to move there. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city grew even more. European powers helped build new churches, schools, and hospitals during this time.

Scholars have many ideas about what the name "Nazareth" actually means. One idea is that it comes from a Hebrew word for "branch."

This might link to old prophecies about a branch bearing fruit. Another idea is that the name comes from a Hebrew word meaning "to watch." This could mean the town was a "watchtower" or a protected place on a hill.
