He played a vital role in the development of the American magazine industry. Willis was known for his ability to connect personally with his readers. He often embedded his own personality into his travel writings. This approach helped him build a strong and lasting reputation. He eventually became the highest-paid magazine writer of his era. His professional success helped prove that American readers would support literary works.

Willis was born on January 20, 1806, in Portland, Maine. He grew up in a family deeply involved in the publishing industry. His grandfather owned newspapers in Massachusetts and Virginia. His father, Nathaniel Willis, founded the Youth's Companion. This was the world's first newspaper created specifically for children. Willis had several talented siblings. His sister, Sara Willis Parton, wrote under the pseudonym Fanny Fern. His brother, Richard Storrs Willis, was a composer of music.

His literary journey began during his time at Yale College. He graduated in 1827 and spent time touring North America. He started publishing poetry under various pen names. He used "Roy" for religious subjects and "Cassius" for secular topics. In 1829, he served as the editor for The Token. He also founded the American Monthly Magazine that same year. After the magazine failed, he moved to Europe to work as a foreign correspondent. He wrote letters for the New York Mirror about life in Europe. These writings were later collected in a book titled Pencillings by the Way.

This level of pay was considered unusually high. Even the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow expressed jealousy regarding Willis's earnings.

Willis was a central figure in a famous literary circle. He maintained a close friendship with Edgar Allan Poe. Willis provided financial assistance to Poe during difficult times. In January 1845, the Evening Mirror published the first printing of Poe's poem, "The Raven." Willis praised the poem for its masterly ingenuity and imaginative lift. He also acted as a bridge between different writers. He introduced Longfellow to important literary figures in England. However, he was also involved in "The Longfellow War," a literary conflict involving Poe and supporters of Longfellow.

Despite his professional triumphs, Willis experienced significant personal tragedy. He lived at a rural estate named Glenmary on Owego Creek. In 1845, his wife, Mary Stace, died during childbirth. Their daughter, Blanche, also passed away at that time. Willis recorded his grief in his personal notebooks.
