Being a professional writer was a financial struggle for Poe. He was the first well-known American to earn a living only through writing. This was difficult because there was no international copyright law. American publishers often used British works without paying for them. This made it harder for American writers to earn money. The Panic of 1837 also affected the economy and publishing. Poe often had to make difficult requests for money. Despite these struggles, he became a highly skilled critic and storyteller.
