The river stays in a rift valley. This is a low area between two mountain ranges. These ranges are called the Vindhya and Satpura. The river flows for 1,312 km. It passes through many different lands. Some parts are green with lush forests. Other parts are dry. Near Jabalpur, the river flows through Marble Rocks. These are made of magnesium limestone and basalt. The water falls over a cliff there. This is called the Dhuandhara waterfall. It creates a mist that looks like smoke.
