Napoleonic Code

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, France did not have one set of laws. Different towns had their own rules. Some rules came from kings or local lords. This was called feudalism. It made life very confusing for many people.

Napoleon Bonaparte was a powerful leader in France. He wanted to fix this. In 1804, a new set of laws began. This was called the Napoleonic Code. A group of four legal experts wrote it. Napoleon helped lead their meetings. He made sure the laws were passed.

The Code made laws clear and easy to read. It was based on old Roman laws. It had sections for people and property. It also had rules for how to get property. One rule said there could be no secret laws. All laws had to be published for everyone to see.

This book changed the world. Many countries used these ideas to make their own laws. It helped many places modernize. The Code is still used in France today, though it has changed over time.
