Nanjing Man

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nanjing Man is a very important discovery from the past. It refers to fossils of an early human called Homo erectus. These fossils were found in China. They help us learn how early humans lived in East Asia. Finding these bones tells us a lot about our history. Scientists study them to see how different species changed over time.

Finding the fossils was a step-by-step process. First, a group of experts identified Hulu Cave as a special place. They thought it might hold many old animal bones. In March 1993, a local worker named Liu Luhong searched the cave. He found fragments of two skulls and one large molar tooth. The skull pieces were found deep in the limestone cave. They were about 60 to 97 centimeters underground.

Learning the age of the bones took a long time. Scientists used a method called mass spectrometric U-series dating. This tool measures uranium to find out how old something is. In 2001, researchers found the skulls were very old. They estimated the age to be between 580,000 and 620,000 years. This was much older than they first thought. One study in 1999 had given a different estimate.

This discovery changed what we knew about history. Before this, we thought Homo erectus arrived in East Asia later. The new dates pushed that timeline back by 270,000 years. It showed that these humans lived in Asia long before modern humans existed. The skull shapes were also quite unique. They had different sizes and measurements than other fossils in China. This shows there was a lot of variety among early humans.

Today, you can visit these amazing fossils in person. They are kept at the Nanjing Homo erectus fossil museum. The museum is located in the Nanjing area of China. It shows the skull fragments to everyone who visits. You can also learn about how these people moved through China. It is a great way to connect with the deep past. Seeing them helps us understand our own story.
