Long ago in Europe, people acted out holy stories. These were called mystery plays.

The name comes from an old word for a miracle. These plays told stories from the Bible. They showed things like the start of the world. They also showed stories about Adam and Eve.

Many plays were part of a long cycle. A cycle is a group of plays. A whole cycle could take twenty hours to finish. It might last for many days. Some plays moved through towns on decorated pageant carts. These carts let crowds see the show.

Groups of workers called guilds helped make the plays. Each group took a part of the story. For example, the bakers showed a miracle with bread. The carpenters showed the building of a large boat. The goldsmiths showed the story of the wise men.

Some plays were also called miracle plays. These focused on the lives of saints. People still perform these plays today. In the United Kingdom, towns like York still put them on. In Spain, the Misteri d'Elx has been played every year for a long time.
