They are recognized as a major act in the emo and pop-punk genres. While they have been associated with these labels, the band members have often rejected them. The current lineup includes lead vocalist Gerard Way, lead guitarist Ray Toro, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way. Their music is known for its emotional depth and storytelling. They have become one of the most significant rock groups of the 2000s.

The creation of their music involves various recording processes and professional collaborations. In their earliest days, the band recorded songs in an attic. These recordings are known as "The Attic Demos." Later, the band worked with professional producers like Rob Cavallo to create large-scale projects. Their live performances are also highly produced and involve complex elements. For example, they often use pyrotechnics, which are controlled bursts of fire and light, during concerts.

However, these intense performances can be dangerous. During the filming of a music video, Gerard Way suffered torn ligaments in his ankle. Drummer Bob Bryar also suffered third-degree burns on his hands and legs.

The band's history is divided into several distinct eras defined by their albums. Their first era began with the 2002 release of "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love." This was followed by their major-label debut, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge," in 2004. The third era was defined by their 2006 rock opera concept album, "The Black Parade." This album used a central theme to connect its songs. Their fourth era included the 2010 release, "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys." Each era brought different sounds and visual styles to their fans.

The band formed in September 2001 in New Jersey.

The September 11 attacks heavily influenced Gerard Way to start the group. Witnessing the events at the World Trade Center changed his life path. The original lineup included Gerard, Mikey Way, Ray Toro, and drummer Matt Pelissier. Mikey Way suggested the band name after seeing a book title at Barnes & Noble. Shortly after the band formed, they recruited Frank Iero to play guitar. This addition happened just days before they recorded their debut album.

My Chemical Romance achieved massive commercial success through several milestones. Their second album, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge," attained platinum status within a year.

This means it sold a very large number of copies. Their third album, "The Black Parade," was an even greater success. The lead single, "Welcome to the Black Parade," topped the UK singles chart. In the United States, the song reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. These achievements solidified their massive global following.

The band also faced significant public controversy during their peak popularity. In 2008, the British newspaper Daily Mail published articles calling the band an emo "cult." The tabloid used inflammatory headlines to link the band to serious social issues. This coverage caused tension between the media and the fans. In response, about 100 fans gathered at Marble Arch in London to show support. Despite this negative press, the band's popularity continued to grow. They remained a powerful force in the music industry.

My Chemical Romance has connected to many other musical movements and artists. They have toured with famous acts like Green Day and Muse. They also collaborated with the band The Used on a cover of "Under Pressure." This song was a benefit single for tsunami relief efforts. The band's influence can be seen in how they use music to address social themes. After a breakup in 2013, they reunited in 2019.
