Indigenous Peoples have used music for thousands of years. They made instruments from things found in nature. They made rattles from gourds and animal horns. They also made drums using wood and animal hides. These tools help people play songs and dance.

Other groups brought new sounds to the land. French settlers brought the fiddle and the violin. They also brought instruments like the flute and the trumpet. Some people even wrote operas, which are big musical plays. In the 1800s, many people owned a piano at home. This helped them learn to play and sing.
