Indigenous music is a very important part of this heritage. It comes from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This music has been around for over 60,000 years. It is used in social and ceremonial gatherings. The didgeridoo is a famous wooden instrument from this tradition. Some believe it is the oldest instrument in the world. Rock art in the Northern Territory shows people played it 15,000 years ago.

Many different styles of music work together in Australia.

Indigenous artists often mix traditional sounds with modern styles. They might play rock, country, hip hop, or even reggae. The band Yothu Yindi is a great example of this. Their 1991 song "Treaty" was a big hit on the charts. They used the traditional Yolngu dance in their shows. This helped share their culture with many new people. Other artists like Baker Boy even rap in both English and Yolngu.

Early Australian music was shaped by British colonies.

This led to a style called bush music or bush ballads. It began with songs sung by convicts in 1788. These songs told stories about life in the wild. They sang about workers like shearers and drovers. Some songs even railed against the government. Many of these ballads were written by poets like Banjo Paterson. His book "Old Bush Songs" was published in the 1890s. The song "Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous example.

Country music is another huge part of the culture.

There are two main types of Australian country music. One type is called bush music and focuses on local life. This style has roots in Irish and English folk music. The other type sounds more like American country music. Slim Dusty was a massive star in this genre. He sold more than 7 million records during his career. His famous 1957 song was "A Pub With No Beer." He even received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sydney.

Today, Australian music connects to many global trends.

Music for children is also a big part of the industry. Groups like The Wiggles are very well known. From ancient songlines to modern pop, music stays vital. It helps people share their stories and their pride.
