Meet the wild plantain. It is a wild type of banana.

This plant grows in large clumps. Its leaves grow up straight. This is different from most bananas we eat. The flowers are red or dark red.

The fruit can be blue or green. These fruits have many seeds inside. Because of the seeds, people do not eat them. In the Philippines, people call them butuhan. This name means "with seeds." In Thailand, they call them kluai tani. People there use the leaves for crafts.

This plant is very important to history. It is an ancestor of the bananas we grow today. It gave the B genome to our bananas. A genome is a set of instructions for a plant. Scientists think farmers cooked wild bananas long ago. This helped them make the bananas we know now. This plant is native to parts of Asia. It grows in China and Southeast Asia. It also grows in the Indian subcontinent.
