A mummy is a body that does not decay.

This can happen by chance. Extreme cold or dry air can stop decay. These are called spontaneous mummies.

People also make mummies on purpose. These are called anthropogenic mummies. They often do this for religious reasons. In ancient Egypt, people wanted to live well in the afterlife. They used a salt called natron to dry the body. This took about forty days. They kept the heart inside the body. They believed the heart was the seat of feeling. Then, they wrapped the body in many layers of linen.

Scientists study mummies to learn about the past. In 1903, they used the first X-ray on a mummy. Now, they use CT scans. These scans let scientists look inside without touching the body. They can even see tiny pieces of cloth. This helps them learn how people lived long ago.
