Evidence of deliberate mummification is much older than once thought. While Egypt is famous for it, other cultures practiced it much earlier. The Chinchorro people in Chile created mummies around 5050 B.C. In North America, the Spirit Cave mummies in Nevada are over 9,400 years old. Research shows smoke-dried mummification occurred in China and Southeast Asia over 10,000 years ago. In Egypt, a 5,600-year-old mummy was recently found using linen and plant oils. 
Egypt also produced a massive number of animal mummies. Over one million animal mummies have been discovered in Egypt. Many of these were cats, which were highly significant. Others were sacred ibis birds. Radiocarbon dating shows many ibis mummies date between 450 and 250 B.C. 
Modern science has transformed how we study these remains. In 1903, Howard Carter and Grafton Elliot Smith used an X-ray on Thutmose IV. This was the first X-ray of a mummy. In 1992, the First World Congress on Mummy Studies brought together over 300 scientists. This meeting helped integrate biomedical data with archaeology. Today, researchers use CT scanning to perform digital autopsies. These scans are so detailed they can reconstruct tiny linen pieces in 3-D. 
These technological tools provide deep insights into ancient life. Digital scans allow scientists to study mummies without damaging them. They can determine causes of death and even study ancient lifestyles. For example, scans helped researchers understand the life of Tutankhamun. A 2008 scan also found an organic rod used to drain the brain. This discovery corrected older theories about the tools used by ancient embalmers.
