Most people in Europe use this name for a plant called Artemisia vulgaris. In East Asia, people often talk about Chinese mugwort or Korean mugwort. These plants belong to a large group called the genus Artemisia. They are important because people have used them for many things for a long time. They are used in cooking, in medicine, and even to keep insects away.

Many people use mugwort as a way to make food taste different. The leaves have a bitter flavor that can be used in many dishes. You can eat the leaves or young shoots either raw or cooked. In Germany, people use it to season roast goose for Christmas dinner. In Japan, it is a key part of sweets like yōkan or kusa mochi. Korean cooks use it to make special soups and rice cakes. Even before people used hops to make beer, they used mugwort for flavor.

People have used mugwort for medicine since at least the Iron Age. In East Asia, a practice called moxibustion uses the plant. This involves burning dried mugwort on specific points of the body. Some people use it to help with things like colds or coughs. In North America, Indigenous peoples used it in many ways. They made teas to treat fevers or used it in washes for skin issues. They even used the smoke to clean certain areas.

History shows how much people have valued this plant through the ages. In the 10th century, mugwort was part of a famous Anglo-Saxon charm. During the Middle Ages in Europe, people thought it could protect them from evil spirits. Roman soldiers even put it in their sandals to help with tired feet. In China, the famous poet Su Shi wrote about mugwort in the 11th century. Some very old poems from 3 BC also mention the plant. It has been a part of human life for thousands of years.

While mugwort is useful, it can cause some problems for some people. The plant contains a substance called thujone, which can be strong. Because of this, doctors say it should not be used during pregnancy. The pollen from the plant can also cause hay fever or asthma. This pollen usually travels less than 2,000 meters through the air. It is often highest in the morning between 9 and 11 am. To help with allergies, it is best to cut the flowers before they bloom.
