The Mass Transit Railway, or MTR, is the main train system in Hong Kong.

It is a huge network that helps people move through the city. The system includes heavy rail, light rail, and even feeder buses. As of December 2022, the network had 179 different stations. This includes 99 heavy rail stations and 68 light rail stops. There is also one high-speed rail terminus for very fast travel.

Because it is so large, it is the most popular way to travel in the area.

The MTR works by connecting many different parts of the city. It uses several lines to carry people to urban areas. One way it makes travel easy is through the Octopus card. This technology was added in September 1997 to help people pay for fares.

The system is also very reliable for its passengers. On an average weekday, over five and a half million trips are made. The trains are very punctual, reaching a rate of 99.9% for arrivals and departures. This means the trains almost always arrive exactly when they should.

People began planning this system because Hong Kong was growing very fast. In the 1960s, the government saw too many cars on the roads.

Consultants from a British company named Freeman, Fox, Wilbur Smith & Associates studied the problem. They suggested building a rapid transit rail system in 1967. They originally thought the city would have a much larger population by 1986. When new data showed fewer people, the planners had to change the scale of the project. They decided to build a smaller initial system first.

Building the tracks was a big job that took many years. The government created the Mass Transit Railway Corporation in May 1975.

Construction on the tracks officially began on November 11, 1975. The first section opened on October 1, 1979, under Governor Murray MacLehose. Later, the Tsuen Wan line began service on May 17, 1982. This line cost HK$4.1 billion to build.

The Island line opened a few years later in May 1985. These steps helped the city grow into a modern place.

You can see how the MTR connects to the whole world. In 1998, new lines were built to connect to the new airport.

This included the Tung Chung line and the Airport Express. The Airport Express even lets travelers check in their bags at the train station. This makes traveling to the airport much faster and easier. The MTR is now a huge part of daily life for everyone in Hong Kong. It links homes, offices, and even the airport together in one big web.
