technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

MPEG-4 is a set of rules for digital data. It helps computers save video and sound. This process is called compression. Compression makes files smaller. This helps movies play on the internet. It also helps them work on phones and TVs.

Many people helped make these rules. Two leaders were Touradj Ebrahimi and Fernando Pereira. MPEG-4 is not just one thing. It has many parts. Some parts handle sound. Other parts handle video. One part is called AVC. This stands for Advanced Video Coding. It is used for high-definition video. You might see it on Blu-ray Discs.

MPEG-4 can do many jobs. It can mix video and speech. It can even show 3D graphics. It uses profiles and levels. A profile is a small set of tools. This helps different devices work together. This makes it easy to share media. It is a very flexible way to use data.
