MPEG-4

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

MPEG-4 is a group of international standards for digital data. These rules help computers manage audio and visual information. This process is called compression, which makes files smaller. Smaller files are easier to send over the internet. They also work well for telephone calls and video chats. You might use this technology when watching videos online. It is a very important way to handle multimedia today.

This technology works by using many different tools. It can mix video, audio, and speech data together. This is called multiplexing, which helps keep everything in sync. It can even show 3D graphics and interactive objects. The system uses profiles and levels to manage its work. A profile is a specific set of tools for a task. A level helps limit how hard a device must work. This makes sure different gadgets can all talk to each other.

Many experts worked together to create these rules. A group called the Moving Picture Experts Group led the way. Two main leaders for the project were Touradj Ebrahimi and Fernando Pereira. They first introduced MPEG-4 in late 1998. Ebrahimi later became the president of JPEG. The standards were officially named ISO/IEC 14496. Since then, the group has continued to update and grow the rules.

MPEG-4 is divided into many different parts. Part 2 handles visual data like video and still images. Part 3 is for audio and includes Advanced Audio Coding, or AAC. Part 10 is very famous and is called Advanced Video Coding. We often call this AVC or H.264. This part is used for high-definition video and Blu-ray Discs. Part 14 is the MP4 file format used for storage. There are even many more parts for things like fonts and subtitles.

You likely use MPEG-4 every single day without knowing it. It helps play movies on the World Wide Web. It also makes digital television work smoothly in your home. When you use a videophone, MPEG-4 might be helping the voice travel. It even helps protect digital rights for music and movies. This is called Intellectual Property Management and Protection. It ensures that creators are treated fairly when they share their work.
