This region is also known as the Mountain West or the Interior West. It is a subregion located within the broader Western United States. The United States Census Bureau officially recognizes eight states in this division. These states are Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The region is defined largely by the presence of the Rocky Mountains. These massive mountains run north-to-south through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico.

Geographers often divide the Mountain West into several smaller subregions. The Southwest region includes Arizona, New Mexico, southern Nevada, and far west Texas. The Intermountain region consists of Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. There is also the Front Range region, which covers northern New Mexico, Colorado, and southeast Wyoming. Some people view the northern parts, like Idaho and Montana, as part of the Northwest or the Northern Rockies. The southern portion, including Arizona and New Mexico, is often separated as the Southwest. These different areas help describe the vast variety of land found here.

The terrain of the Mountain West is more diverse than any other U.S. region. It contains some of the highest mountain peaks in the continental United States. It also features massive desert lands and rolling plains in the east. The Great Basin Desert covers almost all of Nevada and parts of western Utah and southern Idaho.

The Colorado Plateau also creates smaller desert lands across several states. In Colorado, the San Luis Valley stands out as the largest high valley desert in the world.

Climate patterns in this region are also incredibly varied. Most of the area has a semi-arid or arid climate, meaning it is generally dry. However, alpine climates exist in the high mountains of every state. These mountain peaks can receive massive amounts of rain and snow. In contrast, other parts of the region receive very little moisture. The High Plains in the east receive moderate snow but very little rain.

Elevation plays a massive role in the identity of these states. The eight Mountain states have the highest mean elevation of all 50 U.S. states. This means the average height of the land is higher here than anywhere else in the country. Colorado has the highest mean elevation of all the states.

Mount Elbert is also the highest peak in the entire Rocky Mountain range. The highest summits in the region are found in the Southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Other high peaks are located in the Sawatch Range and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Human populations in the Mountain West are changing rapidly. This is currently the fastest-growing region in the United States. States like Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona are among the fastest-growing in the nation. Phoenix, Arizona, is the largest city in the region.

The geography of the Mountain West connects many different natural systems. The region stretches from the High Plains to the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Range. The landscape transitions from flat, rolling plains into rugged mountains and deep deserts. This variety of landforms creates many different habitats for plants and animals. Whether it is the canyon floors or the snowy mountain tops, the region is defined by its extreme changes in height and moisture.
