It is located in Chizhou, within the Anhui Province. The mountain holds a dual importance for both culture and nature. It is recognized as one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. It is also classified as a 5A level scenic spot. The area is part of a larger tourism strategy called "two mountains and one lake." This strategy connects Mount Jiuhua with Taiping Lake and Huangshan. The protected area of the mountain reaches 174 square kilometers. This large region is divided into 11 different scenic spots.

The landscape of Mount Jiuhua is defined by many natural features. There are 99 peaks throughout the area. The highest point is Shiwang Peak, which stands at 1,342 meters above sea level. Other notable peaks include Lotus Peak. Visitors can find diverse scenery like old pines and green bamboo forests. The terrain also features strange rocks, waterfalls, and streams. Many of these features are found within caves and valleys. This natural beauty is why the area was named a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019.

The mountain has held different names throughout history. During the Han dynasty, it was known as Mount Lingyang. In the Liang and Chen dynasties, it was called Mount Jiuzi. The current name, Jiuhua, comes from a famous poet. Li Bai lived during the Tang dynasty and traveled to the mountain. He wrote a poem about the peaks. His poem described the mountains as looking like a heavenly river. This literary connection helped establish the name we use today.

A central part of the mountain's identity is its connection to Dizang Bodhisattva. This connection began with a man named Kim Qiaoque in 719 AD. He was a prince from Silla, which is modern-day South Korea. He became a bhikkhu, which is a Buddhist monk. Kim Qiaoque lived on Mount Jiuhua to cultivate himself for 75 years. He died at the age of 99. His body remained intact as a sacred relic. Because he resembled Dizang Bodhisattva, the community believed he was an incarnation of that being. This belief made the mountain a sacred site for Dizang Bodhisattva.

Religious life on the mountain reached great heights during certain eras. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the mountain was a major center for faith. There were as many as 360 temples built on the slopes. The monastic community was also quite large during this time. Between 4,000 and 5,000 monks and nuns lived there. Today, the mountain remains a popular pilgrimage destination. It is especially famous in Southeast Asia, South Korea, and Japan.

Many specific temples can be found throughout the mountain region. Some of the most renowned temples include Ganlu Temple and Tiantai Temple. Other important sites are Zhiyuan Temple and Huacheng Temple. Visitors can also find Baisui Palace and Tianchi Temple. There are many more, such as Qiyuansi, Roushen, and Dabeilou. These temples house many sacred Buddhist relics. One of the most striking features is a tall statue of Dizang Bodhisattva.

Mount Jiuhua connects natural science with spiritual tradition. Its status as a geopark highlights its geological importance. At the same time, its Buddhist history makes it a center for religious study. The mountain serves as a bodhimanda, or a place of enlightenment, for Dizang Bodhisattva. This combination of features draws many different types of people. Scientists study the rocks and forests. Pilgrims come to honor the history of the monks. Both groups help preserve the mountain's unique character.
