A motorcycle taxi is a specialized form of transportation where a passenger travels on the back of a motorcycle.

These services are licensed in many countries and offer a way to move quickly through busy areas. In most cases, the passenger rides pillion, which means they sit directly behind the driver. However, the number of people on a bike can change depending on where you are. In Cameroon, for example, a single motorcycle might carry as many as four children at once.

These vehicles are vital for transport in many parts of the world.

The way these services operate varies greatly by region and local laws. In Thailand, licensed drivers often wear orange vests to stay visible.

They may also carry a yellow card with their photo and details for passengers to see. In India, drivers are known as pilots and often use distinctive yellow and black motorcycles.

Many countries now use ride-hailing apps to connect drivers with riders. In Indonesia, the service is called an ojek, and apps like Gojek and Grab help people navigate heavy traffic.

These apps allow people to find rides in crowded cities like Jakarta or Surabaya.

Different countries have established specific rules for how these taxis function. In Brazil, the Senate approved standards for drivers and couriers in July 2009. To be a driver there, you must be at least 21 years old. You also need a Category A license held for at least two years and must complete a training course. In London, the service is regulated by Transport for London and the Public Carriage Office. These motorcycles are even equipped with intercom systems to help the rider and passenger communicate.

Some London bikes even have racks to carry small suitcases for airport trips.

The history of these services shows how they grew from informal ideas into large industries. In Brazil, some records suggest the service began in 1994 in Crateús. Other accounts say it started in Bauru in 1996 when a biker used a banner to ask for help. In mainland China, motorcycle taxi services can be traced back to the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the United States, a service called Moto Limos Club launched in 2011 in California and New York. This service used Honda Gold Wings and allowed passengers to bypass traffic through lane splitting.

Economic factors play a huge role in why people choose motorcycle taxis. They are often much cheaper than traditional cars or buses. In China, a short trip might cost only 5 yuan, which is less than one US dollar. In Indonesia, short trips often cost between 5,000 and 10,000 rupiah. In Vietnam, the xe ôm is a very popular way to travel because it is faster than a bus.

In Nigeria, there are approximately three million motorcycle taxis, known as okadas. Over one million of these vehicles operate in Lagos alone.

Working as a motorcycle taxi driver can be a difficult job with many challenges. In Mexico City, thousands of drivers work in informal arrangements. These drivers often work long hours, averaging 11.3 hours per day. They may earn low wages, such as approximately US$59.18 per week. Research shows that 49.5% of these drivers reported musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, only 11.6% of these workers in Mexico City were affiliated with a health system. These statistics highlight the physical and social pressures of the job.

Motorcycle taxis connect to many different parts of modern life and urban systems. They serve as a solution for "last-mile" transport in Indonesia, reaching areas where four-wheeled cars cannot go. In the Philippines, companies like Angkas and JoyRide use mobile apps to manage rides.

These services have even been used for deliveries. In some places, like the UK, the service is a niche industry for specific needs like airport travel. Whether through a mobile app or a street corner queue, these motorcycles remain a key part of global movement.
