To turn, riders use a technique called broadsiding or powersliding. They slide their bikes sideways into the bends. This helps them scrub off speed while still moving forward. On the straight parts of the track, they can reach speeds of 110 km/h.

Riders must find the grippy parts of the track to pass others.

The history of speedway is full of interesting stories. Some evidence shows races happened on dirt tracks before World War I. In the early 1920s, a rider named Don Johns used broadsiding in the United States.

These tracks are between 260 and 425 meters long. The surface is made of loose materials like shale, granite, or crushed rock.

Workers water the track to keep the dust down. This helps everyone see clearly during the race. The track surface is also leveled by tractors using special rakes.

This keeps the racing surface even for all the riders.

Safety is a major part of every speedway event.

Tracks often use air fences to protect the riders. These are soft, inflated panels placed on the bends. They help soak up the energy if a rider hits them.

Riders also use a steel shoe on their foot to help slide. This tradition started with early pioneers who used old coal shovels. These small details show how much skill and care goes into this fast sport.
