Mossi Kingdoms

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Mossi kingdoms were many groups of people in Africa. They lived in a place we now call Burkina Faso. Long ago, a princess named Yennenga started a royal line. She left her home and met a hunter named Rialé. They had a son named Ouédraogo. He was a strong leader with many horse riders.

Ouédraogo built the city of Tenkodogo. His sons also built their own cities. This helped the Mossi kingdoms grow very large. The largest kingdom was Ouagadougou. Its king was called the Mogho Naaba. He was the Emperor of all the Mossi. The Mossi had expert riders on horses. They were very good at fighting.

In 1896, the French took over the land. They made a colony called Upper Volta. The French used the old Mossi ways to rule. Today, some Mossi kingdoms still exist. They are part of Burkina Faso. They still have kings and queens. These leaders still have a lot of influence in their culture.
