Monywa is an economically vital city located in the Sagaing Region of Myanmar.

It sits on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River, northwest of Mandalay. Many people refer to the city as "Neem City." This nickname comes from the many neem trees that line the local streets. Monywa serves as a major center for trade and commerce in the region. It is also recognized as a cultural hub for poetry in Upper Myanmar. Famous contemporary poets such as Min Swe Hnit and K Za Win have lived there.

The climate in Monywa is quite unique compared to its neighbors. It is part of a region known as the "Dry Valley." This area is the only place in Southeast Asia with a hot semi-arid climate, known scientifically as Köppen BSh. This specific climate occurs because the Dry Valley sits in the rain shadow of the Arakan Mountains. The mountains block much of the moisture from reaching the area. High temperatures and high evaporation levels also prevent it from having a tropical savanna climate. The weather is very hot throughout the entire year. The months from April to July are particularly intense.

Rainfall patterns in Monywa can be quite extreme. While the region is generally dry, heavy rain does occur. On October 19, 2011, the city recorded a significant amount of rainfall. This event set a new 24-hour rainfall record for the month of October. This was the highest amount recorded in Monywa in 47 years. Before this, the previous October record was set on October 24, 1967. These fluctuations show how the semi-arid environment can change quickly.

Monywa is a central location for transport and regional administration. It is the site of all government offices for the Sagaing Region. This includes the regional parliament. Some groups, such as the "Steering Committee for the Return of All Regional Offices to Sagaing City in Accordance with the Constitution," disagree with this. They argue that using Monywa as the capital is unconstitutional under the 2008 Constitution of Myanmar. For travel, the city is well-connected by road and rail. The Mandalay-Budalin branch railway line serves the city.

Most people reach the city by bus because the road from Mandalay is in good condition.

The Chindwin River provides another essential transport route. During the monsoon season, the river is navigable all the way to Hkamti. For most of the year, boats can travel as far as Homalin. The city also has its own airport to serve the local area. These connections help the local economy thrive. Monywa links to several other towns, including Budalin, Dabayin, Ye-U, and Kin-U. This makes it a vital junction for moving people and goods.

The economy of Monywa is driven by agriculture and industry. The surrounding Chindwin valley produces many goods like beans, oranges, pulses, and jaggery. Jaggery is a type of palm sugar. The city contains many mills that produce cotton, flour, noodles, and edible oil. Monywa has a very famous history in the textile industry. For one hundred years, it provided 80% of all the blankets in Myanmar. These are often rough cotton blankets.

It features a massive stupa that looks similar to Borobudur in Indonesia. This structure dates back to 1303, though it was reconstructed in 1939. It is said to hold more than 500,000 images of Buddha. Nearby, the Maha Bodhi Tahtaung Laykyun Sekkya is a massive standing Buddha statue. It is 115.82 meters tall, which makes it the third tallest statue in the world. Including its pedestal, the total height reaches 129.23 meters. This site also features a 95-meter long reclining Buddha statue.
